The Wilderness is Necessary

“For the Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step through this great wilderness. During these forty years, the Lord your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.”’” ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭2:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Many times when we hear about the Israelites going through the wilderness, we are taught that it wasn’t the best time of their journey. You get the picture that they were lost; aimlessly wondering around until God told them where to go. The children of Israel clearly didn’t want to be there…and we’re often taught that we should avoid thewilderness’ as well.

Although the Israelites experienced many trying times in the wilderness, this was a very pivotal place for them. Their time in the wilderness was preparation for their promise. When they left Egypt, they left only knowing the culture and habits of the Egyptians. Although God had delivered them, they didn’t know God…they didn’t even know themselves outside of being slaves. God used their time in the wilderness to prepare them for the promise. He had to remove all of their old habits and mindsets from their past in Egypt. He also had to show them their true identity and most importantly, God used the wilderness to establish a relationship with the Israelites. God never abandoned them during their time in the wilderness; He provided everything they needed.

The wilderness’ isn’t a bad place…it’s simply the place where God is preparing you for the promise. You can’t go into your place of promise with an old identity, old mindsets and even an old relationship with God. You can’t get to the promise without the wilderness. Don’t despise your season of wilderness, learn from it.
